Free Weights vs. Machines

Hi,

Today’s topic is on free weights vs. machines.

Almost every weight lifter and body builder will tell you that free weights are better than machines.

I agree with that.  But, that does not mean machines are useless.

They are safer when you get to heavier weights.  You won’t have to worry about the weights coming down and crushing you (providing you use the safety stops).

Their main problem as I see it is that they put you in a groove.  That groove is based upon an average height person.  If you are much shorter or taller then you are just out of luck.

Even though you can adjust the machines a little bit, you are sometimes in a wierd groove.

There are some machines I can’t use at all just because I can’t contort my body to get in them properly.

However, there is a way to use machines and super intensify your workout – no matter how strong you already are.

Here is the technique.

Do your normal workout.  Let’s say you are doing legs.  You do squats, lunges and whatever else to torture yourself with.

When you are done with your leg workout, walk over to the machine leg press machine.

Take a weight that you know you can press 1 time.  Go ahead and do the leg press.

Add more weight and do 1 more press.

Keep adding weight until you go through the whole weight stack or until you can’t lift the weight at all.

If you can lift the whole stack do it once.  Rest for 10 seconds only.  Press it again.  Rest for 10 seconds again.  Do this for a total of 5 times.

If you can’t lift the stack, then back off to the last weight you could lift and do the above press and rest for 5 times.

This is a killer finish.  It gives you a lot more weight added to your overall workout.

And it is done when you are all warmed up.  So your muscles will be less likely to get hurt.

And you will be more limber.

Try this every other workout and watch how much stronger your legs get.

Then you won’t have to worry about free weights vs. machines, because you will be using them together.

Thanks
