Does it Matter What You Eat?

Hi,

Does it really matter what you eat? After all a calorie is a calorie is a calorie, right?

Oh, if only it were that simple.

Yes, a calorie is a calorie so it shouldn’t make any difference if you eat mostly protein, carbs or even fats.

If you are burning more calories than you take in then you should lose weight.

Like I said, if only it were so easy.

The body is a lot more complex than that.

Let’s look at a study from the International Journal of Obesity a few years ago.

They studied 4 groups of people. Group 1 and Group 2 were told to reduce their calories by 1000 calories a day.

Group 1 was told to eat 2 eggs with their breakfast (protein). Group 2 was told to eat 1-2 bagels with their breakfast (carbs).

That was the only difference. The calories in group 1 and 2 were the same.

But, the results weren’t. Group 1 lost 64% more weight and reduced their waistline by 34%.

Now that is quite a difference. So you might think – like all the high protein diet fans out there – that eating more protein is better for you in this case.

But, wait, I said there were 4 groups. Group 3 and group 4 were not told to reduce their calories or given any instructions at all, except group 3 was told to eat 2 eggs with their breakfast and group 4 was told to eat 1-2 bagels with their breakfast.

Based on groups 1 and 2 you might think that group 3 would have lost more weight than group 4.

However, that wasn’t the case. Neither group 3 or 4 lost even 1 pound of weight and definitely nothing off of their waistlines.

So what can we take from this? If you are on a diet then your food choices are more important and will make a difference in how much weight you do lose.

If you are not on a diet, then it really doesn’t matter from a weight loss point of view what you eat.

However, no matter if you are on a diet or not, you should strive to eat nutrient rich foods – ie eat healthy.

So, does it matter what you eat? Well, if you are trying to lose that last bit of weight or fat around the waistline, then yes it does.

If you are just trying to maintain, then not so much. Just eat good for you foods.
